I Can Help With

Discover the real reasons behind your overeating, weight, and body image issues

Body Image

Let’s be honest, do you know anyone who is happy with their body?

Most people I meet, no matter how skinny, strong, or fit have something about their body they can’t stand. Whether it’s their stomach, nose, or lack of muscle, everyone has something negative to say.

Statistics reflect our strong dissatisfaction with our bodies:

  • 9 out of 10 women in the US are unhappy with their appearance
  • 2 out of 5 women and 1 out of 5 men would give up 3 to 5 years of their life in exchange for weight loss
  • More than half of the females between 18 and 25 would prefer to be run over by a truck than be fat, and two thirds surveyed would rather be mean or stupid than fat

Body hate is adversely and profoundly affecting our youth:

  • Adolescent girls are more afraid of gaining weight than getting cancer, losing their parents, or nuclear war
  • 81% of 10 year old girls experience a fear of being fat
  • 80% of all girls have been on a diet by the time they have reached the fourth grade
  • One half of teenage girls and one fourth of teenage boys are dissatisfied with their bodies
  • Nearly 50% of girls aged 3-6 are already concerned about their weight

Men and boys are in no way immune from this body hate phenomenon either.

  • facing tremendous pressure to morph into our culture’s idealized body type of muscular and lean.
  • Disordered eating patterns are as common in males as they are in females
  • 1 in 3 people struggling with an eating disorder is actually male.

We often go through life feeling insecure and stressed constantly deciding which events and activities to avoid and how to even get dressed in the morning. We starve ourselves, over-exercise, think terrible thoughts about our bodies and character all with the expectation of ending up in a place of self-love. This diet-shame-cycle is particularly dangerous for our youth who are at great risk for developing a poor self-image and disordered eating patterns that can last a lifetime.

Body image is a battle for your mind. – Marc David

Winning the battle means gaining control over your own imagination despite what the cultural norms are throwing at you. The healing happens when we embrace now.

At The Runaway Fork, we teach tools to help you resist the cultural messages that your body is not good enough.

We help you accept and rejoice in your body as it is and as it looks to help you feel confident and secure about going out there in the world.

Can we come to a place of love for our bodies in a culture that idealizes thin?

Only 5% of American females naturally possess the body type portrayed as the ideal in advertising.

So where does that leave the other 95% of us?  It’s like we are trying to squeeze our size 8 foot into a size 5 shoe and it’s just not going to happen!
